Document
requests could be Fraud
February 8, 2008
The Toronto Real Estate Board has received notification
from a Member working in the Beaches area that a "Buyer" is
exhibiting some questionable behaviour and attempting to
get copies of documents that would be relevant in a fraud
scam. Here are the point-by-point details.
-
Seller receives letter in the mail that attempts
to sound like it came from a lawyer
-
Letter indicates
interest in purchasing the property but needs to
arrange a mortgage
-
Letter requests proof of insurance
and tax documents be sent from the Seller in self
addressed/stamped envelopes to the potential Buyer
-
The letter mentions working with a Brokerage
and REALTOR (however upon investigation there is
no relationship with either beyond the request
for information on a couple of listings)
-
The REALTOR
then receives a letter in the mail from the potential
Buyer requesting more documentation on a property,
again, documents are to be mailed in the self addressed/stamped
envelopes provided.
-
The potential Buyer indicates
his address and phone number in both letter to
the seller and REALTOR
-
However when a phone call
is made to the potential Buyer, a women answers
the phone and indicates that the Buyer does not
communicate over the phone. He will only do business
by correspondence.
